2020 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 26)
Glasgow : The conference on climate change (COP 26) will take place at Glasgow in Scotland from November 9 to November 19, 2020. As many as 30,000 people are likely to attend this conference, which aims at stabilising the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in order to tackle the problem of climate change.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere is one of the main contributors to climate change. There is an enormous variation in the carbon dioxide emissions between countries. The more affluent the country, the greater its CO2 per capital emissions. For instance, a US or UK citizen emits an average 16 tonnes and 10 tonnes of CO2, respectively, while a citizen of China, India and Zambia releases an average 8, 2 and 0.26 tonnes per capita of CO2, respectively. As a country starts developing, there is an exponential rise in its demand for energy, much of which still comes from fossil fuels. As the amount of CO2 emitted is a function of the total number of humans and the average tonnage per capita CO2 emissions the population numbers of a country has direct bearing its total carbon dioxide emissions.
It is estimated that India will require 5 times more energy in the future in order to continue increasing the standard of living of its citizens so unless this increase demand for energy met by energy supplied coming from renewable sources this could make India, with is population of 1.3 billion souls one of the world’s major CO2 contributors in the future. This is the major dilemma!
In an interview with Population Crisis CEO David Richardson in 2016
In an interview with Population Crisis CEO David Richardson in 2016, Sir David Attenborough highlighted the problem that population plays in climate change when he said, “if one solves some of the problems of producing energy through renewable energy means, there is no point in using twice as much energy or having twice as many children…will man have the wisdom to use this energy sparingly…he has his doubts…man doesn’t have a good record of solving these problems”!

The inexorable rise in CO2 levels is an alarming situation. If countries around the world could cut their population to half, then this would go a long way in bringing down temperature rise to manageable levels on earth.
